Sergio García debuts as a designer: introducing his new Torre Golf Course in Portugal

Some careers don’t require dramatic turns, only maturity. Sergio García’s is one of them. After more than 25 years as a professional golfer, the player from Borriol has embarked on a new chapter — that of golf course designer. It’s a natural evolution for someone who has spent half his life reading and interpreting the game from within, on the finest courses around the world.

His new role is, in essence, a continuation of the philosophy that has always defined him: respect for golf, precision, strategy, and emotion. And it all began at Mediterráneo Golf, the club where he struck his first shots, discovered his passion, and laid the foundations of the career that would take him to the top. From that starting point, his vision has now expanded to Portugal, where he has just completed his first major creation.

Torre: Sergio García’s first course design in Europe

In the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo coast, just an hour south of Lisbon, lies the new Torre Golf Course — the first European design signed by Sergio García. It is the second course at the exclusive Terras da Comporta resort, following The Dunas Course, designed by the renowned Scottish architect David McLay-Kidd (creator of Bandon Dunes), already hailed as the best course in Portugal.

Measuring 6,575 metres from the back tees and playing to a par of 72, Torre combines risk-and-reward holes, short par-threes with character and par-fours shaped by doglegs that demand calm judgement and surgical precision. The small, subtly contoured greens, inspired by García’s favourite course — Valderrama — give the layout its unmistakable character: technical, tactical and full of soul.

A design with personality: strategy, rhythm and respect for nature

Set naturally among pines, dunes and rice fields, the course embodies an idea that García often repeats with conviction: golf is not just about distance, it’s about decisions.

His design balances difficulty with enjoyment, giving players the sense of facing a course with its own life and rhythm. The bunkers and sandy waste areas evoke Scottish links without directly imitating them, while the narrow fairways force players to think before they swing. There are no gimmicks here — only clean, coherent architecture that lives in harmony with its surroundings.

Developed with a team experienced in the projects of José María Olazábal, the design unites sustainability and strategy, two principles that García believes are essential to modern golf.

Inspiration from Valderrama

The spirit of Valderrama resonates throughout Torre — not only in the greens, but in the very philosophy of the layout. The inspiration comes from García’s competitive years on that legendary Andalusian course, where he learnt that golf can become art when mind, technique, and patience are in balance.

The holes do not punish — they teach. Every obstacle serves a purpose; every mistake offers a lesson. The trees flanking certain fairways, the textured rough and the gentle slopes of the greens are nods to that distinctly Spanish style of design that values intelligence as highly as talent.

Even the wind, ever-present on Comporta’s changing days, becomes an ally that shapes the character of each round. On Torre, no two games feel the same.

The connection with Mediterráneo Golf and the Sergio García Golf Academy

Despite the international scale of the project, Torre remains deeply personal. It represents the essence of what Mediterráneo Golf means to García — a place where technique meets emotion, where one learns to respect every shot and to enjoy the process.

That same spirit defines the Sergio García Golf Academy, located at his home course in Borriol: a training centre that shares Torre’s philosophy of love for the game, precision, vision and constant learning.

While new generations of golfers grow under his guidance in Spain, in Portugal that same teaching has taken form as a course — two sides of one legacy that unites education, design, and emotion.

A legacy that transcends the game

With Torre Golf Course, Sergio García has not simply opened a new venue — he has opened a new stage of his life. From player to mentor, from competitor to creator, it’s another step in a career that already belongs to the history of Spanish golf.

His next ventures will take him to Mayakoba (Mexico) and Bahrain, where further projects will bear his unmistakable stamp: courses with soul, technique, and authenticity.

The boy who grew up among the olive trees of Borriol, practising on the greens of Mediterráneo Golf, has gone from dreaming of winning majors to designing the places where others will pursue their own dreams. And that, without question, is the most enduring victory of all.
