How to choose the perfect golf driver before hitting the course

Selecting the right driver can be the difference between a frustrating round and a memorable day on the course. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, understanding what to look for in this key club will help you enjoy the game more.

In this guide, we’ll give you the essential tips to find your ideal driver. Plus, we’ll show you how you can test, rent or purchase one directly from our Pro Shop at Mediterráneo Golf before your next round.

What is a driver, and why does it matter?

The driver, also known as the 1-wood, is typically used for tee shots on long holes. It’s the longest club in your bag with the largest head, designed to maximise distance. But without control, power alone won’t get you far.

A good driver helps you strike the right balance between distance, control, and comfort.

Key factors when choosing your driver

1. Loft: the angle that makes all the difference

The loft refers to the angle of the clubface. Players with a fast swing speed usually benefit from lower lofts (8° to 10.5°), while slower swings are better suited to higher lofts (up to 12° or more), helping launch the ball higher with less effort.

2. Shaft flex: more stiffness or more flexibility?

The shaft must match your swing speed. A shaft that’s too stiff may struggle to lift the ball, while one that’s too flexible can reduce accuracy. At the Pro Shop of Mediterráneo Golf, our experts can help you try different shaft flexes (regular, stiff, senior…) to find the best fit.

3. Head type and volume

Most modern drivers have a 460 cc head, the legal maximum, but smaller heads offer greater manoeuvrability. Some models also feature adjustable weights or settings to favour a draw or fade, depending on your swing.

4. Club length

While standard drivers measure between 44 and 46 inches (ca. 117 centimetres), comfort varies from player to player. A customised length may improve your consistency off the tee.

Why you should try before you buy (or rent)

Every swing is unique, and what works for someone else may not work for you. At Mediterráneo Golf, we offer a full swing analysis studio featuring Trackman 4, video analysis, pressure mat and TaylorMade custom club fitting—so you can test with confidence.

If you’re not ready to buy, you can also rent the ideal driver for your round and return it afterwards. It’s a convenient solution for guests or players looking to try before they commit.
